A Refuge in Times of Trouble (Part 1)

This Psalm covers everything we need to be sustained in times of trouble. It is a refuge to those who will believe God’s promises of deliverance, and protection and victory. It is a Psalm of warfare, with the believer winning every time, provided that he remains under the shadow of the Almighty- God. That’s the only place of refuge and a place for victory against the enemies. With the shield of faith, we shall tread and trample the enemy when he comes against us. It is a promise; we must believe, or else, we will fall into the hands of fear, anxiety and worries. These spirits are tormenters of our soul. Even when reality is that we witness, there is another reality that embraces us to safety. Faith is its name; The Bible says, For whoever is born of God is victorious over the world; and this is the victory that conquers the world, even our faith (I John 5:4). My brother and sister in Messiah, we have been provided with everything needed to be secured in God’s shelter in times of trouble. The shield of faith is the part of God’s armor that keeps us defended and protected. Our battle is not in the physical, but in the spiritual sphere, although it is manifested in the physical. Fighting with guns is to exempt God from the equation. The root of the problem must be cut off and pulled out with the right weapon in the spiritual, for the weapons of our warfare are not physical, but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds (II Cor. 10: 4).

It is from the Secret Place of the Most High that we will witness the destruction of the enemy on the left and on the right, without affecting even the hairs of our head. We will be as spectators hidden in the place of refuge. So, it is that God is our refuge in times of trouble. No matter the behavior of the ocean; how high the waves. There is a place to be still before Him in this chaotic world and it is very close to our God. Remember, that it is only there that you and I will be delivered and secured. Psalm 37: 1, says, Fret not yourself because of evildoers…. For they shall soon be cut down like the grass and wither as the green herb. Instead, trust in the Lord; Delight yourself also in the Lord… commit your way to the Lord… and He will bring it to pass… and be still and rest in the Lord; wait for Him and patiently lean yourself upon Him; fret not yourself because…  of the man who brings wicked devises to pass (Ps. 37). Under the shadow of the Lord God there is refuge, joy, freedom from fear and worries. A thousand might fall at our side, ten thousand at our right hand, but it shall not come near us (Ps. 91:7) (Paraphrased).

When I look at a picture of a lighthouse, it speaks to me of a secure place of refuge, although its functions are not that of a fortress or a refuge. In its warnings the boats of dangerous areas and in its guiding them to a safe route, it is compared to a traffic light or sign. So, we find in the lighthouse a spec of hope in the strength it expresses in the darkest of the night through its shining light, guiding the boats to safety, and free from accident. Life is like that of a boat. The ocean is the world we live in. The lighthouse is the Word of God, and His Holy Spirit guiding us to truth and to safety, away from danger. His Word is the Light that redirects us from darkness to light and brings us to His secret place, the place of refuge. In this vast world of ocean, filled with uncertainties and crossroads, deceits and dishonesty, troubles on its every side, we feel lost and confused when we walk away from God’s secret place- the shadow of His wings. For us to be covered with His pinions and find refuge under His wings, we must be close to Him, as a hen protects her young ones under her wings. This analogy is well fitted for this situation in order for us to understand how close we must be to Him to experience all the blessings and safety He offers, and not to feel the beatings from the world through the waves of troubles.   God’s place of refuge is not only for times of trouble, but it is a place for us to abide as long as we are in this world.  YAHSHUA said, Abide in Me, and I will abide in you; if a person does not dwell in Me, he is thrown out like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, and they are burned (John 15:4,6).

In these days, when the storm of pandemic and the vaccine have taken the world by surprise, to fulfill the evil plan to destroy mankind, in order to bring about one world order, know for certain that is under the shadow of the Almighty that you and I will be protected, and hidden from it all. Trust not in a neighbor; put no confidence in a friend. Keep the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your bosom… But as for me, I will look to the Lord and confident in Him I will keep watch; I will wait with hope and expectancy for the God of my salvation; my God will hear me (Micah 7:5,7). Therefore, he who is prudent will keep silence in such time, for it is an evil time (Amos 5:13).  Do not fret, but trust in God. YAHSHUA warned us of time such as this: But take heed to yourselves and be on your guard, lest your hearts be overburdened and depressed with the giddiness and headache and nausea of self-indulgence, drunkenness, and worldly worries and cares pertaining to this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap or a noose; for it will come upon all who live upon the face of the entire earth. Keep awake then and watch at all times, praying that you may have the strength and ability and be accounted worthy to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand in the presence of the Son of Man (Luke 21:34-36). Thank God YAHSHUA warned us! I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge, my fortress, my God; on Him I will trust (Ps. 91:2).  How about you?
