His disciples, aloof from all that was happening in the spiritual realm, fell asleep from exhaustion. It was late, they could not keep their eyes open, leaving Him to suffer alone. Everything seemed to going against Him. He took upon Himself all our pain alone. After the disciples failed Him Three times, being in agony, He prayed more earnestly and intently, “My Father, if this cannot pass by unless I drink it, Your will be done,” and His sweat became like great clots of blood dropping down upon the ground. “My Father, if this cannot pass by unless I drink it, Your will be done” (Luke 22:40-47). When confronting the disciples for being asleep instead of praying, YAHSHUA single out Peter to warn him of the coming temptation he was soon going to face. The temptation YAHSHUA was referring to was that of Peter’s denial of Him. Although Peter had said, Though they all are offended and stumble and fall away because of You, I will never do so.” More than one time Peter tried to stop YAHSHUA from accomplishing the redemptive work he had come to do. The first time happened when YAHSHUA showed clearly to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things and be killed. Peter took Him aside and began to reprove and charge Him sharply, saying, this must not happen to You! But YAHSHUA turning away from him said, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are in My way; for you are minding what partakes not of the nature and quality of God, but of men” (Matt.16:21-23). Peter, without knowing, was an instrument in the hand of Satan against the will of God for the salvation of mankind. He again tried to interfere with God’s plan when he cut the ear of one of the high priest’s servant when they came to arrest YAHSHUA. But when the time came for Peter to show his devotion for YAHSHUA, he failed by bringing a curse upon himself, emphatically saying, “I don’t know the man.” Peter denied his Lord to save his own life; as he followed Him at a distance, he was vulnerable to temptation for not being alert, watchful and prayerful as the Lord YAHSHUA commanded him to be. After he had denied the Lord three times, the cock crowed. At that moment, the Lord turned and looked at Peter. When his eyes met YAHSHUA’S, he woke up to the reality of YAHSHUA’S words, “Before the cock crows today, you will deny Me three times.” (Matt.16:21-23). Peter then wept bitterly. When Peter denied the Lord, he also left Him, in his words, “I don’t know the man.” YAHSHUA forgave him however, and Peter was reinstated into a new relationship with Christ and in the position of “Fisher of man”. No longer was Peter a coward, but a true soldier in the army of God and he died a martyr’s death.
Peter in his denial of his Lord, represents the end time church, the church of Laodicea: lukewarm, indifferent, sleeping church, unprepared for spiritual battle, lacking in prayer, denying the faith and abandoning its principles, a church rich materially and very poor spiritually; the Laodicea church wants the kingdom without the partaking of YASHUA’S sufferings; she wants the crown without her self- denial to carry her cross to follow the Lord; she wants to be glorified without her sanctification; They are worshipers of money and preachers of prosperity; they believe one is only blessed when they are worldly prosperous. When Peter denied the Lord, he also left Him, when he said, “I don’t know the man.” However, in his repentance, he was reinstated into a new relationship with Christ and in the position of “Fisher of man.”
YAHSHUA’S warning to the disciples, keep awake, watch and pray is directed to us today, also. Another time when He warned the disciples to be awake and to be watching, was when He spoke of the things that are to come in the end times. He concluded by saying, Keep awake then and watch at all times, praying that you may have the full strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man (Luke 21: 36). One cannot pray without being awake and alert. This is high time, with the sense of urgency. Bent knees before our God, should be the position we must take before Him in supplication for our deliverance from it all that is happening in this earth right now. The spiritual junkies voided of solid teachings we listen to through the waves of radio, television, and internet, we must abandon, for they are the causes for us to be spiritually malnourished. Seemly, all we want is the chocolates, the ice creams, the cakes and cookies, the foods, that makes us feel good. Forgetting the protein- the building blocks of the cells, as in the completeness and perfection spiritual maturity; as in the sanctification and self-denial, as in suffering for Christ and with Christ, as in “live not I but Christ.”
Stay here with Me, keep awake, keep watch and pray. That’s the Lord’s desire for each one of us. Let’s do it!
THINK ABOUT IT!
