The Two Witnesses

When YAHSHUA sent the disciples as His messengers two by two, He followed the rule of credibility of two witnesses. In fact, they were His witnesses. He said to them:  Behold, I send you out like lambs into the midst of wolves… Whenever you go into a town and they receive and accept and welcome you, eat what is set before you, and heal the sick in it and say to them, The kingdom of God has come close to you (Luke 10). And the message was, The kingdom of God has come close to you (Luke 10: 9b). With that declaration, YAHSHUA was saying, God’s redemptive reign has come through Me. YAHSHUA is altogether the kingdom and the authority of the kingdom. The disciples were sent to herald Messiah’s arrival. The future coming of the two witnesses will also herald YAHSHUA as the Messiah; they will represent the law and the prophets in the persons of Moses and Elijah. God set them apart for the future, in the time when the earth namely, Israel will experience His wrath by means of the great tribulation. In His mercy, He gives the nation another chance to repent, as it were in the days of old when He sent prophets to warn the people before He sent judgment upon them.  The Prophet Malachi 4:5-6 says, Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes; and he shall turn and reconcile the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the land with a curse and ban of utter destruction. This prophecy has been known for thousands of years among the people of Israel. They are aware of it and supposedly are waiting for Elijah to come as a sign “of the great and terrible day of the Lord.” The great tribulation is called Jacob’s trouble Jeremiah 30: 7: Alas! For that day will be great, so that none will be like it; it will the time of Jacob’s trouble, but he will be saved out of it.

Why do I think the two witnesses to be Moses and Elijah? In YAHSHUA’S transfiguration on the Mount Hermon, two witnesses stood by Him from heaven: Moses and Elijah. They appeared to YAHSHUA conversing about His exit from earth, which was about to happen in Jerusalem. They appeared in splendor and majesty and brightness (Luke. 9:28-32).  Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and the prophets, which link them to the nation of Israel as prophets in the past, were witnesses of YAHSHUA’S ordeal, death and resurrection and return to heaven, fulfilling the Law in its integrity.  They were witnesses for reason to be fulfilled in the end times as future witnesses in the first half of the tribulation to the nation of Israel.  There are a few parallels, among many others, between Moses and Elijah that will help us believe that these two are the witnesses of Revelation eleven: They were both prophets from the tribe of Levi;  Moses met God at Mount Sinai; he stayed there forty days and forty nights without eating and drinking; Elijah met God at the same mount, and like Moses neither ate nor drank for forty days and nights; Elijah walked forty days to the mount. Moses redeemed Israel from slavery in Egypt; Elijah will redeem Israel at the end time through his witnessing ministry.  Moses turned the waters into blood, and brought several plagues to the land of Egypt, as Pharaoh hardened his heart not to let Israel leave Egypt. Elijah, in the days of wicked Ahab, shut the heavens so rain did not come for three and a half years. He commanded fire to come down from heaven to consume Israel’s enemies and it did (I Kings 1:10). We read in Revelation that these witnesses will have power to shut up the sky, so that no rain may fall during the days of their prophesying; and they also will have power to turn the waters into blood and to smite and scourge the earth with all manner of plagues as often as they choose These two witnesses will be given power also to keep evil in check for 1,260 days (Rev. 11: 6). But the main purpose is for them to be witnesses to the nation of Israel concerning their Messiah and Israel’s taking part on His death in their ultimate rejection of Him. It is a fact in the Moses’s Law that a minimum of two witnesses had to be provided before a Jew could be convicted of murder (Deut. 17:6; 19: 5). The unfairness of YAHSHUA’S trial was illegal and against their law. They took away YAHSHUA’S right and handed Him to the Romans to be crucified, a death chosen by them, without merits, since YAHSHUA was not guilty of any wrong doing.  So, Moses law testifies against them.

These two witnesses who lived many years apart from each other, had a rehearsal experience while on earth of what they are to do in the very far future of the world, mainly, Israel’s world. Obviously, the great tribulation is directed to Israel, according to the prophets Jeremiah and Daniel and Zechariah. It will be a time of great refining and absolute cleansing of Israel’s evil. And at that time Michael shall arise, the great prince who defends and has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, straightness and distress such as never was since there was a nation till that time…. (Daniel 12: 1a);  And in all the land, says the Lord, two-thirds shall be cut off and perish, but one-third shall be left alive; and I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined and will test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, and I will hear and answer them; I will say, It is My people; and they will say, The Lord is my God (Zech. 13:8,9).

These two witnesses will suffer rejection and be killed by the beast of those days, but only “after they have finished their testimony and their evidence is all in.” They will have a difficult time living in the world in those days, for the world will be in ultimate spiritual and moral chaos under the leadership of the antichrist, the lawless one. He will act under the power of Satan with all sorts of miracles and signs and delusive marvels and by unlimited seduction to evil with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they did not welcome the Truth but refused to love it that they might be saved (II Thess. 2:9-10).  Their dead bodies will be exposed in the open street of the great city which is in a spiritual sense called Sodom and Egypt, where also their Lord was crucified (Rev. 11:7-8). In other words, Jerusalem.  After three and a half days, God will breathe life into them and will call them back to heaven (Rev. 11:11-12). Many will glorify God, as a result.  After they leave, the woes will continue on earth through the trumpet and bowl judgments.

My friend, the world is getting ready for the days of the great tribulation for those who continue rejecting the Truth. But for of us who have received the Truth, the rapture is for certain imminent. Choose this day the Truth.  You hold the key to your eternal destiny. Wake up, wake up, rise up for Truth!
