It Was at the Cross Where Judgment and Mercy Met

When YAHSHUA came to earth to redeem us from the penalty of sin and eternal death, He suffered all judgments from the Law. No one could ever fulfill the Law to its perfection. Only God the Son, Who was sinless and blameless and guiltless. That way, the Law had no power of judgment over Him. The world was condemned to eternal death without a Redeemer to save it. YAHSHUA became a curse in our instead, for the Bible says, Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree (Gal. 3:13). The Law condemned, and the cross was the horror of the curse. It was an instrument for judgment on those who broke it. But at the same time, it was God’s mercy Who took a stand to save humankind. The cross, representing the Law’s severity toward the transgressor, but mercy, flowing from the heart of our Savior, overcame it by fulfilling it with forgiveness extended to the entire world.  Men spiritual position concerning the Law, is well expresses in Paul’s letter to the Romans 7:18-25: For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot perform it, for I fail to practice the good deeds I desire to do, but the evil deeds that I do not desire to do are what I am doing…O unhappy and pitiable and wretched man that I am! Who will release and deliver me from this body of death? O thank God! He will through YAHSHUA Messiah, our Lord! So then indeed I, of myself with the mind and heart serve the Law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.

Paul demonstrates the inability of men to please the Law on its demands without YAHSHUA doing it for us. He concluded by saying, Therefore, [there is] now no condemnation for those who are in Christ YAHSHUA; for the law of the Spirit of life in Christ YAHSUA has freed me from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the Law could not do, being weakened by the flesh. Sending His own Son in the guise of sinful flesh and as in offering for sin [God condemned sin in the flesh [subdued, overcame, deprived it of its power over all who accept that sacrifice (Rom.8:1-3).  Marvelous mercy of God, overlooking the wretchedness of man’s sin, embraced us with freedom from enslaver to sin and guilt and made us heir with YAHSHUA and children of God. He guaranteed us his inheritance, an anticipation of its full redemption and our acquiring complete possession of it- to the praise of His glory (Eph. 1).

YAHSHUA raised us up together with Him and made us sit down together in the heavenly sphere with Him. He did this that He might clearly demonstrate through the ages to come the immensurable riches of His free grace [His] kindness and goodness of heart toward us in Messiah YAHSHUA (Eph.2:6-7) While taking the Law’s judgment upon Himself, He released mercy for the entire world. In His deep cry,” My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?”  He felt the consequential pain we would have felt under the Law’s judgment, judged for hell. We will never understand what was happening in the heavenlies sphere at the time YAHSHUA was suffering His worst pain. The Law is spiritual, it demands and deals severely when broken. We have a picture of the Law represents when God descended to Mount Sinai to covenant with His people, Israel in the letter to the Hebrews:  For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched,  that is ablaze with fire and to gloom and darkness and a raging storm, and to the blast of a trumpet and a  voice whose words make the listeners beg  that nothing more be said to them, for they could not bear the command that was given: If even a wild animal touched the mountain, it shall be stoned to death; but rather , you have come to Mount Zion, even to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem and to countless multitudes of angels in festal gathering. And to YAHSHUA, the Mediator of a new covenant and to the sprinkled blood which speaks [of mercy], a better and nobler and more gracious message than the blood of Abel (Heb.12:18-20, 22,24).

Israel experienced on Mount Sinai the holiness of God.  The Law, a covenant between God and Israel was a serious covenant. Their experience was frightening, even Moses said, “I am terrified.” (vs 21). “What then was the purpose of the Law? It was added [later on, after the promise, to disclose and expose to men their guilt] because of transgressions and [to make men more conscious of the sinfulness] of sin; and it was intended to be in effect until the Seed should come, to and concerning Whom the promise had been made… [but the Law was a contract between two: God and Israel; its validity was depended on both].” (Gal. 3:19,20b). There was no forgiveness provided in the Law for those who broke it. YAHSHUA, however, came and changed that by establishing the covenant of blood through His death on the cross. His blood spoke of mercy, forgiveness and grace. “For it is by His grace that we are saved.” The covenant of blood is between YAHSHUA and those whosoever will – Jews and Gentiles. “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ YAHSHUA.” (Rom. 8:1a). Judgement and Mercy met at the cross. YAHSHUA, having fulfilled the Law and its demands, overcame it for us through mercy. Marvelous grace of God touched the entire world; “there is now no distinction Jew, nor Greek; we are all one in Messiah YAHSHUA; and if you belong to Messiah, then you are Abraham’s offspring and heirs according to promise” (Gal. 3:28-29). To YAHSHUA be glory and honor now and forever more.

THANK YOU, LORD!
